Clinic Waiting Room with Volunteer Readers

There are many ways to raise funds for your program. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind and a few ideas to help you get started. Have fun and good luck!

Ideas

  • Hold a fundraiser such as a bake sale or pancake breakfast to collect money so the ROR program can purchase new books.
  • Encourage families, community groups or individuals to sponsor ROR programs by donating to ROR the cost for a child to participate in the program. It costs about $40 to provide new books for one child for all ten of their well-child visits from six months through five years of age.
  • Ask local schools, book stores, and companies to hold a book drive for your ROR Site. Many schools have book fairs just before the holidays, and may be willing to collect new or gently used books for ROR.
  • During the holidays, many book stores allow volunteers to wrap presents in exchange for cash donations from customers.

Materials

Print these materials to help promote your book drive or fundraising event. The materials can also be customized for your Site, upon request.

Guidelines

  • Fundraising is a continuous effort that requires patience and persistence. Think of fundraising as “friend — raising.”
  • Know your audience and market the project from their perspective. Show them how the program fits their individual goals or their organization´s mission.
  • Foundations and corporations do not make quick decisions. Individuals are more flexible. Most foundations take an average of three to six months to review a proposal. Most corporations take an average of six weeks to five months. Be sure to apply for on-going funding before your current funding is close to exhausted.
  • Build on your fundraising successes, using each success as a stepping stone for the next effort. Don´t hesitate to ask your current donors to introduce you to other potential donors.
